Before I get started I should clear up the fact that there are no hot sauces that are, in fact, hot. Really, hot sauce is just spicy sauce, though that’s still nothing to scoff at. Spicy can still irritate the skin and mucous membranes of the mouth, which is what causes that burning sensation similar to heat. And if we’re talking Scoville units, there are peppers so intensely high on the scale that they’ll knock you on your ass.
Today, however, I’m talking about some of the best hot sauces that are neither hot nor spicy, but instead sweet, tangy, and just flavorful.
This is hands-down the tangiest of the bunch, very vinegar-like. I love Tabasco on eggs and deli meats.
Tapatio is a lot more savory, more like seasoning. I love Tapatio on plain tortilla chips.
This is possibly my favorite hot sauce around, more of a sweet taste. I love Cholula on pasta, nachos, in chili, burritos.
Sriracha has become this weird pop culture condiment of the hipster era. If you’re not into that scene don’t let that scare you away as true Sriracha lovers loved it before it was a fad and will still love it after. I was first introduced to Sriracha (I like to call it “Rooster sauce”) in Chinese restaurants. I love Sriracha on steak, noodles, pho.
