For the body does not consist of one member but of many, if the foot should say, ”Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, ”Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? If all were a single organ, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, ”I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, ”I have no need of you.” Likewise, a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. United we stand! This simply means, the only condition for us to stand i.e. for our work as a team to succeed, our dreams to become a reality, and our goals to be scored is to be united
Does not unity call; does she not raise her voice? On the heights beside the way, in the paths she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud. I can hear the Herald of good tidings. ”Come together, come together! She raises her voice on the mountaintop. To you O ”independent states” I call, and my delight is to you all. Bring all you have, not one missing- your potentials, skills, resources, even your weaknesses and pride, and let’s be one. When we are disunited woe, failure and reproach shall come upon us like a vagabond, and want like an armed man. I am the way to victory, through me you can get to your desired haven. My house is a stronghold in it is abundance of treasures- I have peace, honor, success, and riches. In fact, all you may desire cannot be compared with me. Hark, the battle is fierce, your rivals are tough; many have they plundered and led captive- a people not too small, equipped and ready are they, to defeat you is their goal. Therefore I urge you; only embrace me and you will walk on you way securely, and your foot will not stumble, and you will find rest. Whoever seeks me finds me but, whoever misses me injures himself. Truly, truly! I say to you, if you reject me, and ignore my words, you will surely fall!”
How can we be united? For us to be united, we must agree. Can two or more people work together if they do not agree? there must be an agreement of aspirations, aims, and purposes between the individuals concerned. This is the basic requirement for any teamwork to commence.
Why should we be united? Firstly, so as to share our burden and solve problems. Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up. If two lie together, they are warm; but how can one be warm alone? Though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him. A threefold cord is not quickly broken. As ”independent states,” it is apparent that we are faced with problems namely: poverty, corruption, maternal mortality, environmental destruction, political instability, etc. posing great threat and causing our future to be uncertain. These enemies of progress; opposing our peace, blurring our visions, and fading our dreams must be confronted! However, concerted effort is indispensable to conquer these formidable foes. Together we must work to achieve this common goal; saving ourselves like a gazelle from the hunter, like a bird from the hand of the Fowler.
Secondly, we need to be united so as to complete. Conversely, if we’re disunited, we are incomplete. Different talents, potentials and skills are combined to enhance growth, productivity and success. Only an individual cannot possess all these; no man is an island- the popular saying. Even the most enjoyable activity of life becomes boring, and tiring without someone to cheer you on, and bear you up.
For us to stand, we must be aware that there are oppositions which might hamper our progress. These include: Firstly, individual differences. We need to know ourselves; our abilities, weaknesses and strength. We must know that every of us are not the same, and can’t be the same; just as we have different names, different faces, so also different character and behaviors. It is natural that as a team- involving two or more people, sometimes misunderstanding, misinterpretation, and misrepresentation might surface just to tear us apart. Things may get so tough and turbulent that we don’t know who to trust anymore, and where to stand. But, the ability to understand, handle, and iron out the differences among ourselves knowing our likes and dislikes makes us brave, and keeps the boat sailing. Innumerable stories have been told of how minor disputes which would have been resolved amicably have torn teams of great and bright dreams asunder. Oh! How are the mighty fallen!
Secondly, superiority complex. This canker-worm which has eaten deeply into the moral fabric of a group of people with a common goal shouldn’t overcome us. We need to immunize ourselves by being selfless, humble, having the interest of others in the team always in our minds, and by mutual acceptance; even though we differ in terms of social status, race, tribe, gender, nationality, religion, ethnic group etc. Instead of discriminating and seeing ourselves superior to others which will do us no good- Let’s be our brother’s keeper.
When do we attain our stand? For everything there is a season, and time for every matter under the heavens. Provided we have cast our bread upon the waters, we shall surely find it after many days- this is a natural phenomenon. We shouldn’t lose heart for everything is beautify in its time. At the due time, we shall eat the fruits of our labor. Learning from a farmer who sows a seed in his farm and waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it until it receives the early and the late rain. Therefore, let’s be patient, establishing our minds, without wavering or being tossed by the wind until our enemies be made our footstool.
When we are united, then we shall not fear though our formidable foes threaten us unrelentingly, our hands shall be on their necks, and we shall crush their loins. We shall blossom like palm trees. Like trees planted by the riverside that yield its fruits in its season. When we are united, then shall we stand; then we shall sing a new song- the song of triumph:
How the enemies threaten with unceasing blows,
But with the weapon of unity, we have brought them low,
Uprooting every discord that was sown;
Hastening our progress which was slow,
In our hearts is a river of peace which overflows.
What a multitude of enemies that was slain,
Who gave us sorrows, aches, and pains,
Who aimed at our strength and happiness to drain;
Oh! This is the fall of a long expected rain,
We are glad that our efforts were not in vain.
Likes Eagles, we shall soar,
Above anything that further seeks our destiny to mar,
We shall not fret, though like lions they roar;
They cannot shake us, because we have gone far;
Never, never! Can they come near.
Oh! What a joy inexpressible,
Because we all sit together round one table,
Discussing on how to make everything stable;
Which was flexible,
And how to empower them to be able.
